Sometimes just the friction of the high-twist yarn is enough to stop the wheel from pulling it on to the bobbin. Check which whorl you are on if the whorl is too small, it puts a lot of twist in the yarn. You can go years without the bobbin winding function operable as long as your machine is kept in good order by regular maintenance (see your machine model operating guide). Tighten the tension on the scotch brake if you use a single-drive wheel, or both the bobbin and the flyer if your wheel is a double-drive wheel.

The part that turns the bobbin winder isn't integral to the sewing function (unless the rod broke off while the machine was still in bobbin winding mode) - if not broken off in bobbin winding mode you can still sew and if that's the case, the peripheral winding machine is the least expensive solution to your problem. Splash out around $25USD for a bobbin winder machine (Simplicity makes a really good one). Be sure to ask what the extra charge would be for a 'servicing' as this includes cleaning, checking timing and other functions, and can add years to the life of your machine. Setting the tension will be one of the first adjustments you will make on the spinning wheel. The bobbin should be turning clockwise when thread is pulled. Is the bobbin case supposed to spin Be sure the bobbin is inserted so that the bobbin will turn clockwise when the thread is pulled. When you move the big wheel (generally by treadling), the drive band makes the flyer turn around the bobbin and twist the fibres. One would be to splash out around $60USD (Google for currency conversion if not in the US) to have the machine repaired. The pipe comes with different inner diameters so make sure the tube fits over the nub on the end of your bobbin. All you have to do to fix this is to readjust your tension then double-check to make sure the bobbin turns again. Really, this isn't a machine killer - you have two choices. Remove the bobbin case and clean any lint or thread that may be stuck or have built up in the machine using either a small brush or vacuum. What has happened is one of two things - either the bobbin winding spool has broken where it was soldered to the top of the gear that turns it, or the entire gear has 'died'.
